This text book is terrible. First week of a online stat class and I'm already pulling my hair out. Book will not teach you anything, it is terrible written. Had to resort to google to understand even week one concepts. On top of that online rental doesn't include online code, which is $113 after tax, so you almost better off just to buy the book if you need it. Not only, that but the ebook is limited to two devices by the publisher. I like to be able to read on my home PC, my work PC, my iPad, and my iPhone. Now I have to choose two or constantly deregister and register devices. Everything about this book and it s publisher are terrible, but if you like me you have no choice but to buy this book. good luck!

Statistics for Business and Economics Paul Newbold Books Reviews

Very bad, avoid if possible.
Does not explain thoroughly, skips steps the are explained in earlier chapters and does not reference whats being skipped
I learned statistics and probability in engineering school but I only understood it in business school thanks to this textbook. It is still an indispensable reference text in my work. Thanks to the author.
So two things for buyers The 6th edition is out and your professor likely is trying to get you to buy that one. Second even if the condition is marked as new by a seller on v5, most books are missing the CD-Rom when it reaches here. I haven't found a need for this disk, but the mislabeling by vendors is ANNOYING! The book isn't too bad and has little difference to the 6th edition (the 6th divides the chapters and concepts more), good class notes and a good list of formulas can help greatly. For the formulas Google for "CBS Semester 1 David Juran Statistics" if you can. I also would tell faculty to forget the added costs of v6 and the insanity of special print additions as this book used is plentiful, cheap and has really nothing horribly wrong. You know, use statistics and economics to figure out what is better for students?
If you can avoid buying this textbook for your class, DON'T BUY/RENT THIS BOOK. 1.) Nothing in the book was useful. NOTHING. Literally, whenever I'd try to refer to it to expand on the notes I got in class, I could NEVER find clear, noteworthy information on any of the topics. 2.) The book damages super easily. I only opened it up a handful of times, really, and it stayed on my desk all semester (never took it out of my dorm, never put it in my backpack), and STILL, it looked worse for wear by the end of the school year. If you can't avoid buying this book, I'd recommend splitting the cost with a couple of classmates and to just share it among yourselves (if you think you can do that), because I really learned more from my professor than I did from this textbook. I deeply regret renting this book and was very dissatisfied. NOT AT ALL WORTH THE MONEY. What a waste.
HORRIBLE! This textbook was a required text for an introductory econometrics class I took. The reason I've rated this book as I have the examples and terminology don't do much in terms of TEACHING. Instead, it seems like the author was more intent on impressing other statisticians or colleagues given a very logorrheic/verbose style. Newbold did not consider his audience when compiling this textbook. This comes off as arrogant. There are typos and incorrect solutions. Further, the writing style lends to confusion and a disconnect between what needs to be learned and what is trying to be comprehended from the textbook. With this book, students spend more time trying to learn the author's style as opposed to learning the concepts needed to truly master the math needed to succeed in a career. If you are required to use this textbook for a course, it will be to your benefit to order supplementary textbooks as not much can be learned from this book alone.
As others have already mentioned, this book has too many typos in all the wrong places such as equations. In the page 229, for example, the equation for variance is all minus signs when they should all be pluses. More than once, I have spent couple of hours trying to figure out why my answers were wrong only to find out it was because my answers were based on the wrong equation given by the book.

FYI, not all books have the typo problem. It appears the typo issue has been fixed but there are many earlier prints, like mine, that have this problem.

This is not a beginner's book. Rather, it appears to have been written for intermediate (non-calculus) statistics class. The book's explanations of Central Limit Theorem and others are fairly solid and the authors' writing styles are very fluid. The book does not necessarily look like a mishmash of different authors writing with totally different writing styles, and that is not easy to do when writing a book with multiple authors. So I give kudos to the authors for the overall quality of their writing.

If you a total beginner in statistics, I recommend "Humonguous Book on Statistics". If you are looking to improve your basic knowledge on statistics without going into advance calculus-level statistics, then this is a decent book except for the typos.

I would also like to see a workbook companion as this book's explanations of solutions are very skimpy.

If not for the typos, I would have given this book 4 to 4.5 stars.
Who else is buying this because they need it for a college course?
Honestly though, if it wasn't for me having to purchase the book for university, I would probably have not gone anywhere near this book. There were typos that can be over looked, the book skipped steps, but to top it off, it made typos too which would confuse me since I have no idea where the book went wrong.

Most of my notes came directly from the professor and I only understood what to do after showing the example in the book to the professor.
By the end, I still needed to do homework in the book, I got a good grade in the class so the book is ok.
